Abstract: | Background : Dance became a compulsory subject in Japanese junior high schools in 2012. However, it has been reported that junior high school teachers do not have enough ability to teach dance to their students (Nakamura et. al. 2014). In the teacher training course at physical education universities, the students must be enhanced teaching ability as well as dancing ability. The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of the students' awareness toward dance and dance instruction through the course.
Method : The subjects are the students of Sports Sciences and Dance Studies. In each class, in the first half of a class, they experience some dance pieces which are taught at junior high and high schools ; in the latter half, they learn dance instruction methods through small-group activities, in which they take the role of a teacher and a student in turns.
The survey has been conducted before and after the subjects take this training course. The purpose is to find out their orientation toward dance, confidence in creating and dancing ability, confidence in teaching ability, and enthusiasm for giving instruction.
Results and Conclusions : The result shows that orientation toward dance, confidence in creating and dancing ability, confidence in teaching ability, and enthusiasm for giving instruction are increased after the subjects finished the course. In particular, a significant change is found among the students of sports Sciences, rather than that of Dance Studies. As for Dance Studies, confidence in teaching ability is increased. According to the result, the small-group activities are effective. |
