Abstract:  This report explores the researches on vocabulary guidance pertaining to “thinking” and “logic” in Japanese language education, examining what kind of words and phrases have been selected and what kind of educational guidance has been provided, organizing their achievements and problems, and presenting the direction to develop the vocabulary guidance leading to the growth of logical expressiveness. In the research of Japanese language education, not enough effort has been made to develop the vocabulary necessary to express logical thinking. Almost no investigation has been conducted about the vocabulary pertaining to “thinking” and “logic,” which are to be used by schoolchildren and students in composition. I have examined four relevant publications touching upon the vocabulary guidance pertaining to “thinking” and “logic,” and reached the following conclusion.  (1) We have not been able to appropriately and sufficiently select the words and phrases that will lead to logical writing, while associating them with the educational guidance on “writing.”  (2) We have established no programs to present schoolchildren with the selected words and phrases, matching them with the types of sentences and description processes in composition. Nor have we been able to fully utilize the selected words and phrases in educational guidance on “writing.”  Judging from all these problems, in order to develop the vocabulary guidance that will lead to the development of logical expressiveness, it is necessary, in my understanding, to select the words and phrases pertaining to “thinking” and “logic,” associating them with education of “writing,” and clarify how to utilize them in educational guidance. In addition, taking as an example the study of opinion statements for the higher grades of elementary school, I have selected some expressions related to “thinking” and “logic,” presented how to utilize those words and phrases in educational guidance, and indicated the direction for developing the vocabulary guidance on “writing.”
