Abstract: | Counseling is considered only for the people who have serious pains in Japan. But counseling is useful for everyone who has some problems to solve. We created a new way of counseling in which people can experience counseling casually. The counseling had two features. 1) The counseling was provided by peer counselors who had been studying focusing-oriented counseling for many years not by professional counselors. 2) The counseling was provided in a green park not in a counseling room. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of the focusing-oriented counseling by peer counselors. The number of participants of the counseling was 21 women and 2 men. We conducted the Mood Inventory before and after the counseling and the original counseling questionnaire after the counseling. We did paired t-test and as the results we found that “tension and excitement”, “fatigue”, “depressive mood”, and “anxious mood” decreased significantly and “refreshing mood” increased significantly. We did factor analysis of the counseling questionnaire and extracted three factors : “active”, “positive change of feeling”, and “negative effect”. The correlation analysis showed that the “active” was correlated positively with “fatigue” before counseling and the decrease of “fatigue” by counseling. The “positive change of feeling” was correlated positively with the increase of “refreshing mood”. The “negative effect” was correlated positively with “tension and excitement” and “depressive mood”, and negatively with “refreshing mood” after the counseling. The analysis of free descriptions showed that the focusing-oriented counseling by peer counselors had the general effect of counseling, peer counseling effect, and the unique facilitation effect by the green park. We found that the focusing-oriented counseling by peer counselors had positive effects on people's health and also had the limitation in which the counseling was not effective for the people of high nervous and high depressive mood. |
