Abstract: Most contemporary dance theory is based upon the principles of classical ballet. A knowledge of the system of dance education in the US, as a prime example of practices around the world, provides an understanding of the significance of classical ballet in dance education. I was provided with the opportunity of studying at the University of Arts for one year. Based on my experiences, I produced a report regarding the characteristics of dance training in the US from the perspective of classical ballet. Freshman and sophomore training focuses on the basics. Junior and Senior students choose their specialty and receive training in that field. However, classical ballet tuition is required throughout the four year course. The curriculum is based upon a sound understanding of the nature of dance and classical ballet is obviously considered the basis of all other modes of dance.
