Abstract: Pitch, among four elements of sound, pitch, intensity, timbre, and time value, it plays a big role in deciding the character of melodies. On pitch, melody and harmony, the two elements that compose music with another element, rhythm, have considerable influence. This study, considering the two points mentioned above, analyzes melodies from interval structure aspect, by counting the frequency of interval usage. As a subject, it takes up Arabesque op. 18 by R. Schumann. The study concludes that the interval, frequently used in each section, plays a potent role in forming melodies' character. Also, this analysis method that uses figures, is proved to be valid, to objectively interpret the character of musical pieces, which is often presented with abstract, emotional expressions.
