Abstract: This paper investigated the mental processes, which were undergone during text exchange activities between Japanese and foreign university students, and the meaning by which Japanese and foreign students both work in this activity was explored. It was shown by this research that the focal point of this activity was to show the success of the feeling of familiarity between Japanese and foreign students in short period of time. By carrying out this activity, it was suggested that a Japanese university student with little contact with a foreign student could have a feeling of familiarity with a foreign student. Foreign students having had more contact with Japanese students already have a heightened sense of familiarity. This activity further increased this feeling. When carrying out two or more sessions continuously, it was found that foreign students' impressions of Japanese students were altered. Topics were provided which focused on cultural differences and on universal similarities of people. It was shown that there was a difference in the mental processes between the topics provided.
