Abstract: Where are human beings free? The idea of freedom has been discussed variously since ancient times. But it's worthy of attention that the ancient meanings of freedom have not the modern meanings of freedom. In modern sense, freedom implies the absence of external constraints and coercion. Freedom and cooperation…Freedom in Ancient Greece Ⅲ. Freedom of spirit…Stoics from Hellenism to the Roman Period Ⅳ. Evil and free will…From the Classic World to the Christendom Ⅴ. Self-cause and free will…Freedom in the Medieval Christendom Ⅵ. Freedom of conscience…Christian Liberty In this paper, I will examine the distinctive phases of human freedom.
