Abstract: “A Soldier”is a short story written by Katai Tayama during the Meiji period in Japan. The work received praise from readers in those days. It is said that the literary theory of Katai was affected by symbolism, however it has not been adequately scrutinized. In this report, I examine the text of “A Soldier”and analize how Katai uses symbolism in it.
