Abstract: The present study reviewed research related to PE teachers' beliefs about teacher's role that was published in foreign countries and Japan. The purpose of this study was to propose contemporary research issues to improve PETE programs and activities. The present review of studies on the PE teachers’ beliefs about teacher’s role suggested that almost PE teachers don't have beliefs about the role as teacher of PE classes but coach of extracurricular sports activities. Pre-service and in-service PE teachers must form beliefs about the role as teacher of PE classes that continuing professional development and teaching improvement. Therefore, PETE programs need to provide pre-service and inservice PE teachers with many opportunities for reflection to PE classes together with the others. Further research is needed on the empirical studies research about formation of PE teachers' beliefs in PETE programs and the process of turning-points in the formation of expert PE teachers' beliefs.
