Abstract: The action plan announced in 2003 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) was to encourage institutions of higher education to improve students' proficiency in English required in “their own specialized fields or majors (English for Specific Purposes; ESP).”In Japan Women's College of Physical Education, students are divided into four majors (Sports Science, Dance Studies, Sports Health Studies and Child Development Studies), each of which is assumed to have different learning styles. We carried out a questionnaire survey to find out whether there is any correlation between each major and students' learning style and to define what kind of learning style is effective in teaching each major. As a result, differences and trends in learning style among the four majors were revealed. The data gained from this research will be useful materials to support students’effective learning.
