Abstract: The there construction or there sentence is one of the most common English expressions for presenting or introducing things to the context or discourse. This presentational function requires its subject (i.e., the post-verbal NP) to have some sort of new information ; hence, NPs with definite expression or identifiable referents are generally prohibited (a limitation known as the definiteness restriction or definiteness effect). There are, however, various cases in which definite post-verbal NPs are appropriately licensed in such constructions. Here, such cases are discussed to support analysis of conditions in which definite post-verbal NPs are acceptable, with respect to the kind of information that these NPs carry and the functions of determiners. This is expected to help clarify basic and important points in teaching the construction more effectively to English learners.
