Abstract: This is a practical report about peer support (PS) activities started in 2006 at Japan Women's College of Physical Education (JWCPE). First, I will describe the history of the PS system, some roles of PS in academic education, some approaches by pioneer universities, and the state of achievement of PS in universities across the nation. Then, I will report on the practice of PS at JWCPE. In 2006 and 2007, the effects of the PS system and the educational impact on PS students were investigated using collaborative research funds from JWCPE. Also, the effect of stress management activities performed in introductory education classes was studied in 2008. The PS activity style has changed from “waiting for students to come to PS activities” to “going to students to help them”, based on these research results. Some graphs were made which show the number of PS students and the number of students who have used the PS system, namely, the support desk for freshmen, visits to introductory education classes, meetings with the senior students who have experienced practice teaching and job hunting which were initiated by the PS students, and finally, the “Hogushin”, which is a relaxation room at the school festival using “the dousa method”, a psychological therapy technique. As a result, since 2014, the number of freshmen who have taken advantage of the PS system has increased to more than 300. This is because the number of teachers inviting PS students to classes has been increasing. It is clear that students using the PS system got not only information, but also positive energy from those PS students. Finally, compared to similar activities at other universities, it was found that the PS students at JWCPE have been keeping their motivation, supported by human relationships between teachers, staff, and PS members.
