Abstract:  The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of instructional program to improve game performance of table tennis as net-type games in junior high school Physical Education classes. Game performance of table tennis was focused on the skill of racket and off-the-ball movement in this study. For this purpose, instructional program consisted of drill games, task games and main games in this study. The participants were 34 Junior high school third grade students (only girls) who took part in a 13-hour (A class, 18 students) or 12-hour (B class, 16 students) table tennis unit in Physical Education classes. Each participant completed the formative evaluation after every Physical Education class. Furthermore, skill test of racket and game performance of table tennis was administered. Main games videotaped, and the category of off-the-ball movement (success of move and return, success of move, fail) was used for data analysis. This category allows counting of the frequency of off-the-ball movement as to whether or not these are appropriate. The main findings are summarized as follows : 1. Although the results of formative evaluation showed low values in the first lesson of the unit, they gradually moved to high values. 2. The frequency of rally increased significantly in the post-unit. But, participants did not acquire stable skill of racket in the instructional program. 3. The instructional program acted on improvement of off-the-ball movement in the table tennis game effectively for Junior high school third grade students. These results suggest that the instructional program developed by this research is an effective strategy for improving the game performance of table tennis.
