Abstract: Physical activity for the frailest/frailer older people in need of care might be helpful for them to live in physical or mental health and promote safety in their daily lives, if appropriate activity is given. This study aimed to explore types of exercises and ways of coaching to be suitable for the frailest/frailer older people in need of care. An approach based on Action Research was adopted. The participants were the residents of F special nursing home for the elderly. The physical activity program started in October in 2005 and finished in March in 2009. Two groups were formed. One was the group including all the participants who wanted to join the exercises and the other started 7 months later and it was the selective group only including the participants who can walk by themselves. The first group (participants: 30 to 40) joined the exercises program three times a week and the second group (10 to 13) once a week. The total of the lessons were 209. As a result of this program, slight changes in their movement and positive attitude were shown. Among various kinds of exercise, simple gymnastic exercises and exercises with tubes were effective for the participants. The following points of coaching are important. First, take exercise with slow and moderate movement. Second, take actions which stimulate the limits of the movable area of each joint of their body. Third, assist their movements individually as possible, while doing exercise. Forth, exercise step by step, making use of the movement which they can do. Fifth, encourage them to their movement levels. Sixth, try to find effective movement adopted to the individual disabled levels. Seventh, repeat the same movements or exercises with the same procedure.
