Abstract:  The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate Jean-Georges Noverre's view on “pantomime” in his theoretical work Lettres sur la danse, et sur les ballets (1760). Noverre regards pantomime as one of the most essential elements in ballet. However, as he points out, it cannot be acquired as a mechanical technique, being a bodily process resulting from the inner workings of a performer. In other words, “pantomime” is neither a series of prescribed movements nor the combination of them. It should rather be understood, in Noverre's writings, as a more unfettered expression that stems from the emotions aroused in the performers' mind. The result of this study indicates that we should not interpret Noverre's “pantomime” as equivalent to “ballet mime” in today's sense.
